It’s a well known fact that Microsoft has dropped Aero themes from Windows 8 RTM to improve overall system and battery performance. Windows 8 RTM includes some basic themes (visual styles) and users can now only change the default color of the window and taskbar.
In addition to Aero, Microsoft has also removed a number features from its latest Windows version. Advanced appearance settings is one of the features missing from the newest version of Windows. As you may know, with the help of Advanced appearance settings, one could change default font color of active toolbar menu, change desktop icon color, customize border padding, message box, selected items, hyperlink, scroll bar, inactive title bar and window border.
Users who have been using Windows 8 for a while must be knowing that users can only change text size of various items. In one of our earlier posts titled how to change text size of icons, menus, title bars and message boxes we have shown you how to change the text size of various items in Windows 8.
As Advanced appearance settings is not present in Windows 8, one needs play with Windows Registry to customize above mentioned elements. As every user isn’t comfortable editing the Registry, we have a tiny tool to share with you that helps you change the default window border size in Windows 8.
Our friend at WinAero has developed a tiny tool named Tiny Window Borders that lets you change the default window border size in Windows 8. This tool comes in handy for users who aren’t happy with the default large border size (~3px) and want to change the same in Windows 8. Download, run the tool with admin rights, move slider to the left to reduce the border size and to the right to increase the size. You need to log off and log on to see the change. Alternatively, you can restart Windows Explorer to see the new window border size.
Tiny Window Borders supports both x86 and x64 Windows 8. We recommend you create a system restore point before making any changes to default system settings.
